Responsible governance of gene drive for invasive species in the UK

Developing a team of academics and stakeholders to co-produce a larger project on this topic

Project goals

We wanted to draw together an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary team to develop a large-scale grant proposal for UKRI to explore the potential of gene drive to address pressing biodiversity challenges related to invasive species management in the UK and what governance mechanisms might be needed as this technology progresses in the conservation and environmental domain.

What we did

We brought an impressive expert team together, including academics and project partners and wrote a bid for a UKRI call in 2023.

Activities and outputs

Our main output was the project proposal, submitted to UKRI in July 2023. Becky Ashcroft, the project’s undergraduate research assistant, conducted a literature and documentary review to help us understand this space.
